Did you know that a person can live without rehydrate only 3 days?
Human beings are living things that depend mainly on water for survival. However, it seems that no hydration is a priority on our agendas.
According to the Study of hydration habits of the Spanish population 2008, 9 out of 10 average people, not properly hydrated. The human body is 60%, by nature, water and other muscles. What many do not realize is that just 1% to lower the water level in the body, we at risk of causing harm to the body to the point that some functions are altered or hampered.
The deportólogo and Dominican nutritionist, Richard Marine, states that "many are the risks of neglecting hydration, for example all metabolic processes in the body are made in the presence of water, since the different means of transport at physiological level to intervention processes keep hydrated each body cell. Purification processes also at renal level and even the maintenance of body temperature by perspiration. "
Marine adds that hydration is as important as good nutrition. It indicates that all drinks, not just water, serve to hydrate the body. The attached table contains the amount of liquids that bring different drinks the body.
The Spanish Ministry of Health has five years of hydration boost its population as a preventive measure. As it says its "a person can survive three weeks without food, but only three days without eating liquid."
The low consumption of liquid in our continent is also worrying because most Latin American countries are exposed to climates with more radiation and humidity, resulting in a greater chance that a person is dehydrated, either through sweat, urine or any internal function.
"You have a bad habit of waiting to be thirsty for drinking liquids thing we now know is a mistake, because thirst is a late indicator of dehydration. Therefore, we should not wait for thirst is the parameter for fluid intake, "says Marine.
The Dominican doctor recalled that drinks such as soft drinks, coffee, tea or soda between 90% and 99% of its composition is water-based and therefore help a person achieve their goal of hydration.
Why we not moisturize us?
The European Monitoring Hydration and Health (Hydration and Health Observatory), was given the task of investigating why many people put aside hydration. In 2011, they discovered some of the causes.
One is the fast-paced lifestyle people live today, which means faster pace of activities and less time to worry about the body's needs.
"People are not taking the time to constantly ingest liquids, that causes the body tends to dehydrate and the person becomes aware when and began the process of dehydration," emphasizes Marine.
Another cause identified why many people do not hydrate in time is that they do not like the taste of water neutral and have the perception that other drinks do not fulfill that function, which is an error.
"All beverages hydrate and is more appealing to consume those with some flavor because this makes it more palatable consumption, especially if they are fruit flavors, vanilla, coffee, chocolate" highlights Marine.
Do not let time pass without rehydrate!
The Institute of Medicine of the United States and Canada (IOM for its acronym in English) defines the minimum requirements of liquid, for a healthy adult, 3 liters per day for men and 2 liters for women. However, this may vary depending on the weather, the level of physical activity and height, among other factors. 80% of consumption of any beverage is obtained and the remaining 20% of foods like fruits and vegetables.
The way is to do it gradually properly hydrated throughout the day, it is not advisable to do everything in one moment. When ingested liquid gradually, the body assimilates better and you can transport your pace throughout the body, whereas if a single intake is saturates and must expel much fluid through urine. That is not the only myth about hydration, this table summarizes other and provides answers about its veracity.
So that the liquid is maintained within the body you can consider these tips:
- Look cool and ventilated places, are not unnecessarily exposed to the sun.
- Eat constantly liquids but not thirsty.
- Help children, pregnant and elderly or sick to be hydrated.
- Minimize any physical exertion during the hottest hours of the day.
- Cool off with washcloths to maintain an average body temperature.
Give the role hydration plays in your body, your body will thank you and be able to meet more fully their daily tasks.
