Make Healthy Food Choices

Everyone wants to eat healthy. It can be hard to know how to eat healthy and how to make the right choices. It all comes down to what you eat rather than amounts. Always use your own judgement in the amounts of each food group. To eat healthy, you need to make the right choices not only in the right foods but right amounts.

Ideally you should eat:
  • Grains- Around 6 ounces daily. To achieve this, you can eat 3 ounces of whole grain cereals, breads, rice, crackers, pasta over two servings a day.
  • Vegetables- 2 ½ cups day. Vary the types of vegetables eaten.
  • Fruits- 2 cups daily. Fresh, frozen or dried is okay.
  • Milk-3 cups is ideal. Go for fat-free or low-fat products when choosing dairy. If your lactose intolerant,go for lactose free products and other sources of calcium.
  • Meat and beans- 5 ounces a day is ideal. Try to grill, broil or bake it whenever possible. This minimizes the amount of grease into the equation. Include fish, beans, peas and nuts for variety.
Another thing you should be aware of when cooking your good is to limit solid fats. This includes butter, margarine, shortening and lard. While they add flavor to dishes these fats help to raise cholesterol levels.

Other fats you should be aware of that need to be avoided whenever possible, are saturated and trans fats and sodium. Check the labels on products to ensure you are not ingesting large amounts.

If you pick your foods carefully, and watch what you eat, you will be in better control of your life. Exercise is a great companion to eating healthy. If you keep active and eat healthy you will be able to maintain an active lifestyle for years to come.
