Every American should be concerned about their health and in
maintaining good health. Having medical care when needed is one major
problem of this concern. However, health care concerns involve many
other aspects, besides just going to a doctor when needed.
The United States is purported to have the best and most advanced
medicine in the world. (Fantastic advancements have also been made in
other countries.) But the United States has the most expensive medical
coverage in the world. The recently passed drug law mandated that the
United States will continue to have the most expensive drugs. The new
law for seniors added to the costs of drugs, because each insurance
program is sponsored by individual pharmaceutical companies. These
companies have their own overhead and sale expenses. People in the U.S.
spend more for health care. The higher cost does not mean that the U.S.
has the best medical practice in the world for the general population.
In fact, the U.S. has one of the poorest programs available for most
Americans. Americans pay more and get less.
What style of life is the United States currently offering its
citizens? What is the solution to this terrible problem? How can lower
taxes be justified when local public services such as: good roads,
libraries and health care centers are eliminated? The wealthy are also
incapable of reproducing these services for themselves. Most of the
industrialized world has solved the problem. These countries
nationalized medicine. They offer universal coverage. These countries
offer far better medical coverage at far lower costs. Those in the U.S.
who oppose national health programs, always point to the excessive
waiting for major procedures in these other countries. However, isn’t it
better to have to wait than not to get the needed service at all? If an
individual has the money in those national health care programs, a
person can bypass the national system.
The political right always wants less government and lower taxes to
“starve the Beast.” The U.S. needs to be a compassionate country,
acknowledging the religious belief of “aiding the less-advantaged.” The
U.S. must establish a national health program. (But nothing like the
Medicare drug program which rewards those who gave huge sums of money
through lobbying.) America needs a universal program like Social
Security. A universal health care program would be cheaper and fairer
for those who actually need the program
